Before starting Rock Paper Scissors Records, Rosenbloom and Greenhaus spent years working in the music industry, handling everything from talent management to event planning. They saw first-hand how difficult it was for independent musicians to get their music heard, and they believed that there was a better way to connect these artists with their audience. Together, they came up with the idea for a record label that focused on innovative, genre-defying music, regardless of whether it fit into traditional commercial categories.
Their first step was to create a unique business model that would enable them to bypass the traditional distribution channels. Instead of signing artists to exclusive contracts, Rock Paper Scissors Records offers musicians a digital distribution platform that allows them to retain full ownership of their music and copyrights. This enables artists to have more control over their music and ensures that they get a fair share of the revenues generated from its distribution.
To launch the label, Rosenbloom and Greenhaus organized an event called “Brooklyn Comes Alive” in 2010. The event featured a mix of musicians from diverse genres, including jazz, funk, and rock. It was a huge success, and it laid the foundation for future events that would showcase artists signed to Rock Paper Scissors Records.
Over the next few years, the label continued to grow, signing breakthrough artists like Turkuaz, who would go on to become one of the biggest names on the label. The label’s approach to music distribution is unique in that artists can choose to distribute their music digitally or in physical form, such as vinyl, CDs, or cassettes.
Rock Paper Scissors Records also operates as a collective, with artists helping each other out in various ways. They have also launched an artist empowerment initiative, which gives artists access to industry resources and advice, expanding on the label’s DIY ethos.
In 2020, Rock Paper Scissors Records celebrated its 10th anniversary, a testament to the success of their innovative approach to music publishing. The label has built a reputation for nurturing artists and investing in new technology to stay ahead of the curve in the ever-changing music industry.
