A renewable portfolio standard, or RPS, is a policy mechanism that requires a certain percentage of electricity generation to come from renewable sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, and biomass. Currently, 29 states, the District of Columbia, and three territories have implemented RPS policies, which have been proven to drive the growth of renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
At the National RPS Convention, participants will share best practices, strategies, and success stories from their respective states and regions. Among the topics to be discussed are designing effective RPS policies, overcoming challenges in implementation and compliance, expanding access to renewable energy for underserved communities, and collaborating with stakeholders to build a strong coalition for climate action.
The convention will feature keynote speeches from prominent leaders in the renewable energy and climate advocacy movements. Among the confirmed speakers are former Vice President Al Gore, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, and Pat Spears, the CEO of the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center.
There will also be breakout sessions on specific issues, such as integrating energy storage into RPS frameworks, harnessing the potential of offshore and floating wind power, and using RPS policies to promote energy efficiency and conservation.
The National RPS Convention is organized by the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), a coalition of corporations, NGOs, and utilities that collaborate to increase the deployment of renewable energy. REBA’s mission is to catalyze the transition to a zero-carbon energy system by helping businesses and organizations to purchase renewable energy at scale, driving demand for new renewable energy projects, and advocating for policies that support a sustainable energy future.
“We are thrilled to host the National RPS Convention and bring together stakeholders from across the country to share their ideas, insights, and experiences,” said Miranda Ballentine, the CEO of REBA. “We believe that a strong RPS policy is a crucial tool in the fight against climate change, and we are committed to working with policymakers and industry leaders to make it a reality.”
The National RPS Convention comes at a critical moment for renewable energy and climate action in the US. Despite the federal government’s reluctance to take meaningful steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, states and cities are stepping up to fill the leadership gap by implementing bold clean energy policies. The National RPS Convention provides a platform for advocates to learn from each other, build momentum for renewable energy, and demonstrate that a sustainable future is within reach.[ad_2]
